Review

“Imagine a fizzy, soda-like drink that is drier and so much more sophisticated than soda, what with the sugar and botanical ingredients. Shrubs! Amazing! Wonderful!” - Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist“A shrub is exactly what the people who invented the phrase “slake your thirst” had in mind.  A shrub is full of character and variety. The ingredients―fruit, sugar, and vinegar―are as simple as can be. But the variations are seemingly unlimited. It has another superpower: A strong shrub game can help you make the most of bruised or aging summer fruit” - The New York Times, in an article featuring Shrubs

I originally got this from the library and, after looking through it, realized I HAD to have it in my book collection. I have made the Apple Cinnamon Shrub and it is soooo goood!!!!!Right now I've also got a Cucumber Shrub and a Peach Ginger Shrub infusing right now. What an awesome book - for those who love drinks of all kinds, refreshing, alcoholic, non-alcoholic.

This is a fantastically written and gorgeous drinks cookbook. The recipes are straightforward, easy to follow, and the photography of the drinks and some accompanying food is great. These drinks are starting to make a comeback, and are part of North American history, back to the colonial American era. Not all of them are alcoholic drinks, either, and some of those could work fine if you just exclude the alcohol. It's a great purchase and it's going to take a while to work through my new drinking backlog. I sort of feel like I should wear a tricorne when I read the book, in a good way.

I just discovered this book while looking for a recipe for a cranberry shrub for the holiday season. After only 5 minutes I'm thrilled with it! It has recipes for many of the fruits I grow in my garden including gooseberries and rhubarb! I'd better check my supplies of vinegar and sugar!

Gave one to a friend and one to myself. We can hardly wait until berry season to whip up some shrubs. Handily, I can make cucumber shrub all year long. Not so for tomato. Looking forward to summer and the bounty of the Farmer's Markets for the supplies to make wonderful shrubs.

Love the book. Gives you history of shrubs and lots of recipes. Have been making them and drinking them. A much betteralternative to soda for children. Definitely recommend it.

Wonderful book! I loved learning about the history of this drink and there are so many wonderful recipes that are well written. After reading about the benefits of this drink and trying them, I'm sorry I didn't learn about it sooner. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

I've been fascinated by drinking vinegars and shrubs since I had my first taste at Pok Pok restaurant in Portland, OR. Learning to make my own was a goal that this book made very easy. From simple to complex (flavors...not technique) there is something in here for everyone.

I happened into Shrubs by ordering a bourbon mixed drink at a fantastic Louisville BBQ joint (Feast BBQ). The taste was wonderful and unusual - and I know what bourbon tastes like. So, I looked at the drink menu and sure enough, the recipe included "shrub." I had no idea what that was but it was the ingredient which really made the cocktail. Feast made it's own shrub and I had difficulty finding it. One local store where I bought commercially produced shrub, stopped carrying it. I then happened onto Mr. Dietsch's book. This is where I needed to be all along. The book contains numerous recipes, booze and no booze, apples, cinnamon, ginger, berries, including Kiwis. The ingredients and the few tools you need are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Much cheaper than buying the commercially available brands (great stuff but definitely pricey). An attractive and well presented book. And, contrary to one reviewer, I've made three of the recipes and the results were outstanding every time. One of my efforts changed up almost every ingredient in the recipe (different type of sugar and vinegar) and the result was still good. All subjects are covered here: history of vinegar drinks; where to find ingredients; and names, addresses and reviews of commercial shrub producers. This book is all you need!

Healthy, gourmet, modern drinks for hipsters. Before today's soft drinks there were shrubs...love the creative twist on an old recipe
